Tapping into a moment of shared empathy, Charli talks about the parallel between lockdown and how her life already was due to a chronic neurological illness, ME/CFS. The 90 second film highlights both the struggles created by limitations and the gratitude discovered within life's more simple moments. The film was created with footage documented by Charli and her partner and producer Toby Anthonisz, then edited, narrated and scored by Charli during the first UK lockdown in 2020. Whilst Meena goes about her normal routine she begins to notice a physical aversion to anything rooted in the patriarchy. ‘Shapes We Make’ is a trilogy of short films exploring invisible illness. The films are titled, We Rest, We Rise, We Fall - symbolic of the cycle I experience with both Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Depression. I cut the films with unused footage from a music video we shot in 2018, and the music in each film is an original score from Catherine Whatley, Josef Lumley and myself.
